ABOUT HPMT

ABOUT HMPT

The UK is experiencing a mental health crisis. From stress in our daily lives and at work, to anxiety over global issues, we all need a little help looking after our wellbeing.

In January 2025, NHS England reported a headcount of 818,449 professionally qualified clinical staff members and a total of 1,374,039 NHS & Community Health Service (HCHS). The most commonly cited reasons for sick leave were anxiety, stress, depression and other psychiatric related illnesses. As of 30 June 2025, data from NHS England showed that the workforce as a whole had a vacancy rate of 6.9% (102,576 vacancies), excluding vacancies in the private sector. HPMT has a crucial role to play to ensure that both sickness absence and vacancy rates continue to decrease.

Mental health absence cost the NHS over £80m. This equated to 3.7 million working days lost.

Professionals stated they were suffering mainly from burnout, extreme tiredness, anxiety and stress-related difficulties.

So many healthcare professionals are feeling some combination of tiredness, lethargy, apathy and compassion fatigue.

The massive exodus of healthcare professionals from both the public and private healthcare sectors, mainly due to mental health-related problems, is creating a financial knock-on effect on healthcare trusts, as the staff sick leave bill continues to increase.|

HPMT aims to reverse this trend by encouraging healthcare professionals to turn to one another for support, using each other’s contributed articles and motivational stories to boost resilience and strength to carry on.

We need to use each other as pillars of hope and believe that other professionals’ successes can be applied in our own careers.

We want to:

– affirm and appreciate hardworking professionals

– turn pessimism into optimism

– uplift, inspire, motivate and make people feel better

– provide a source of nourishment and inspiration in healthcare work

When professionals feel motivated and supported in their work, the following can happen:

2030 VISION

– A 25% increase in the number of healthcare professionals working full-time in both the NHS and the private sector.

– A 25% reduction in staff sickness from mental health related issues, saving the NHS alone, around £200 million per annum.

– Better chances to raise staff wages, making healthcare professionals want to stay longer servicing the healthcare industry.

– An inevitable increase in the public’s confidence in the healthcare industry as waiting times are massively reduced.
